Most linguists believe that writing was invented in China during the latter half of the 2nd millenium BC and that there is no evidence to suggest the transmission of writing from elsewhere. The earliest recognisable examples of written Chinese date from 1500-950 BC (Shang dynasty) and were inscribed on ox scapulae and turtle shells - "oracle bones".

In 1899 a scholar from Beijing named Wang Yirong noticed symbols that looked like writing on some "dragon bones" which he had been prescribed by a pharmacy. At that time "dragon bones" were often used in Chinese medicine and were usually animal fossils. Many more "oracle bones" were found in the ruins of the Shang capital near Anyang in the north of Henan province.

The script on these "oracle bones" is known as 甲骨文 (jiăgŭwén) - literally "shell bone writing". They were used for divination, a process which involved heating them then inspecting the resulting cracks to determine to answers to one's questions. The bones were then inscribed with details of the questions and the answers. Most of the questions involved hunting, warfare, the weather and the selection of auspicious days for ceremonies.

NASA Crashes probes into Moon

Normally when we think of space probes, we imagine small satellites orbiting planets and moons, taking pictures and scientific measurements. Well, early Friday morning NASA watched two probes crash into the moon. On purpose.

Now, I know what you might be thinking, so no, NASA was not suddenly handed over to a bunch of pre-schoolers. Rather, scientists are investigating the presence of water (in the form of ice) under the surface of the Moon. The first of the two probes crashed into the Moon around 7:31 a.m., creating a dust cloud more than 6 miles high.

The second probe followed behind the first, taking pictures and measurements as it passed through the dust cloud. It then crashed into the surface about 4 minutes later with an impact about 1/3 the size of the first.

The results of the mission, called LCROSS (the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite), are intended to be the first step in planning a manned mission to the Moon by 2020.

Ducati has just released details for its new Hypermotard 796. Aimed to be a lighter and more compact urban-weapon, the new 796 features a host of changes, including an all-new engine, lower seat height, new colorways, super-light-action APTC clutch and, best of all, a lower price. While it still features all the same traits we’ve come to know and like on its big brother, the 796 now provides an entry-level version for those looking to spend a bit less. Stay tuned for a full review in the coming months! The Hypermotard 796 will be powered by a new Desmodue L-Twin engine. The air-cooled, two-valve powerplant has an 88 X 66mm bore/stroke with a claimed power output of 81 hp and 55.7 lb-ft. of torque. Besides being injected with the favorable traits of other Ducati Desmodue engines, the new Ducati mill also conforms to Euro 3 emission regulations.

The smaller engine also helped shave 22 lbs. off the Hypermotard 1100. Assisting the weight reduction is a frame with less forged components and new upper and lower fork clamps. The 2010 Ducati Hypermotard 796 is claimed to weigh in at 368 lbs.

BMW new series release 2009

BMW has officially announced the details pertaining to the 5th generation 7 Series, so let's cut right to the chase. In Europe, there are five models arriving on the market in November of this year: the 730d; the 740i and Li; and the 750i and Li. The latter two are powered by the same twin-turbo 4.4L V8 that debuted in the X6. In the U.S.-market 7 Series, the turbo eight is rated at 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, and it is the sole engine option being made available. If you want a BMW 7 Series in America, it will be a 750. Europeans get more choices. The 730d's 3.0L diesel I6 pumps out 245 horses with nearly 400 lb-ft of torque. Despite the grunt, it boasts a combined fuel economy number of 32.6 U.S. miles per gallon (39.2 Imperial). The 740 models are powered by the now-familiar 3.0L twin-turbo gasoline engine. In the 7, the 3.0TT's power output is 326 horses and 332 lb-ft -- enough to hustle the 740Li from 0 to 62 mph in six seconds flat. All the engines are connected to a six-speed automatic. Jaguar and Land Rover launched in india

The country's top automaker, Tata Motors, on Sunday launched in India its marquee car brands Jaguar and Land Rover, which it had acquired from the US car maker Ford.
Tata will sell the Jaguar, which had its origins in a motorcycle sidecar company, XF and XKR series for between Rs 63 lakh and Rs 92 lakh, while Land Rover's Discovery and Range Rover would be priced between Rs 63 lakh and Rs 89 lakh.
“It's quite a memorable day in the history and heritage of Tata Motors...JLR has been well received and well established in India (in the past), but over the years this brand has been disconnected from India," Tata group chief Ratan Tata told reporters in Mumbai announcing the launch.
“Now, we have decided to extend the penetration of the two brands in India,” Tata said.
“I think the cars will exhibit the levels of technology and levels of performance here,” he said.
The two brands would give Indian public an opportunity to experience the “pleasure of driving the superior technology”, Tata added. Tata Motors completed the acquisition of the two British marquee car brands last year for 2.3 billion dollars.
Tata Motor suffered a net loss of Rs 2,505.25 crore in 2008-09 mainly on account of JLR that it acquired in March 2008. The expensive JLR marquee suffered on account of the economic meltdown.

Hitachi Software has developed a cool Electronic Blackboard that was announced a while ago. This is an addition to the line of such existing board in the “StarBoard” series. LG found that it had a hit on its hands when debuted its first "Chocolate" phones in 2006 (the KG800 in Europe and the VX8500 in the US), and it's no surprise to see that there will soon be a successor.
The second-generation Chocolate phone, model number BL40, has officially been unveiled today and it's every bit as sexy as the original, if not more.

The handset retains the glossy finish synonymous to LG's Chocolate range, as well as the so-called "iconic red highlights".
New to the second-gen handset is a 4in screen with a 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio that delivers an 800x345 resolution - it has the makings of a useful portable media player, we reckon, and a width of 800 pixels should make web browsing far easier on the eye.
There's a five megapixel camera at the rear, and though further details remain slim, we should be seeing the handset in stores this September.

Nikon has launched what's claimed to be its simplest and most accessible Digital SLR to date.
The D3000 may look like every other DSLR already on the market, but anyone new to the world of professional photography shouldn’t be put off by all its buttons and turn dials, Nikon stressed.
An Intelligent Guide mode aims to demystify DSLR shooting on the D3000 by automatically recommending the appropriate image settings for specific subjects or scenes, for example.

The D3000’s Visual Demonstration mode, although not an inherently new feature, will let you see how your snapped image will look before you press the shutter button. However, the mode will also teach you how to improve your photography skills by identifying the settings used to achieve the image, which is a nice touch.
Nikon’s also built a Guide mode into the camera, designed to take your photography to the next level with more creative shooting options – once you’ve mastered the basics, of course.

In terms of technical features, the D3000 is a 10.2Mp DSLR with 11 autofocus points and a top ISO sensitivity of 1600. A pop-up flash is built into the camera’s body, while a 3in LCD’s integrated into the DSLR’s rear, Nikon said.

Nikon’s D3000 will be available from 28 August at a body-only price of £430 ($708/€504). If you buy the camera with an 18 – 55mm lens then you’ll have to fork out £500.

China’s Haima to launch A0 segment car in 2009
Yet another Chinese car maker will see global attention focused on it during the run up to year 2009 as it lines up a new brand of car. FAW Haima Automobile Co is expected to unveil its new own-brand car in the A0 segment next year thereby launching itself into the big league.
The new model, which will be built at its production base in the southern China city of Haikou, will be an A0 class car powered by Haima’s 1.6L and 1.3L engines. The car maker had earlier announced plans for expansion of two production facilities this month. The two new plants are expected to increase Haima’s annual car production capacity to 450,000 units, which is three-fold.
With China’s auto market already having earned a name as the world’s second largest car mart, the growth registered annually is to the tune of more than 20 per cent . However, a slowdown had been lurking in recent years following a series of natural calamities and a recent fuel price hike.
While the Haikou plant will concentrate on building the A0 cars first followed by the B-segment car or SUVs later on, the Zhengzhou facility will mainly produce minicars,the source added. However, it has been clarified that Haima is in no rush to develop high-end models but will stay focused on minicar segments in the next one or two years.
Haima is expected to invest close to $206.1 million in its plant at Zhengzhou and will produce 150,000 cars there annually. The Haikou plant is also expected to have a similar investment coming up.
The company clearly has lined up its measures toward being a competitive player in a changing world. China’s quest to be on top of the world is expected to be fuelled by the hopes of such projects, it is said

Microsoft pounded itself on the chest last week saying over 96% of netbooks now use Windows. This made me somewhat sad, because I was hoping these little computers could be the break Linux had been waiting for.

The first couple of netbooks all had Linux pre-installed. Unfortunately, Asus chose to go with a custom Linux distribution for which it has yet to release its first update. No Firefox 3, no Flash 10 and no easy way to get additional software. Except for the easy to use interface, they came up with the worst example of what Linux can be. But if there’s one thing Linux offers its choice. It is my opinion that Ubuntu is the most user-friendly Linux distro out there, and I highly recommend giving it a go on your netbook.
