The Big dig
It was a massive mega-project in the city of Boston whose purpose was to relieve traffic congestion along I-93. The plan was to build an enormous 3.5 mile tunnel underneath the city of Boston to help relieve some of this traffic which had gotten worse year after year. The project broke ground in 1991, and it became the most expensive highway project ever in the United States. As of 2006, the Big Dig project cost $14.6 billion. Workers encountered many obstacles while digging the enormous tunnel including glacial debris, buried homes, and even sunken ships. The tunnel had many problems with leaks as it neared completion, but they were eventually fixed. There is one death that is solely contributed to the Big Dig project, which occurred when a 3 tonne piece of concrete ceiling collapsed onto a car, killing the passenger of the car and injuring the driver. Work on the Big Dig project concluded on December 31, 2007. It was one of the biggest projects of its kind in the world.

A Letter to God
Dear Lord,
So for today, God; I've done all right. I haven't gossiped,
haven't lost my temper, haven't been greedy, grumpy, nasty,
selfish, or even indulgent.
I'm very thankful for that - But in a very short time, God, I'm
going to get out of bed, and from that moment on I'm going to
need a lot of help!
Amen.

The Blind Man
Two Nuns are ordered to paint a room in the convent, and the last instruction from Mother Superior is that they must not get even one drop of paint on their habits.
After conferring about this for a while, the two nuns decide to look the door of the room, strip off their habits, and paint the room in the nude.
In the middle of the project, there comes a knock on the door.
" Who is there, " calls out one of the Nuns. "
" The blind man, " replies a voice from the other side of the door.
The two Nuns look at each other and shrug, deciding that no harm can come from letting a blind man into the room. They open the door.
" Nice boobs, sisters" remarks the man with a wry smile, "now, where do you want these blinds ? "

Taipei 101
The Emporis Skyscraper Award winner in 2004, the Taipei 101 tower is currently the tallest skyscraper in the world (until the Burj Dubai is completed) at over 1,670ft to the antenna. Newsweek Magazine has even hailed Taipei 101 as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World while the Discovery Channel calls it one of the Seven Wonders of Engineering. Taipei 101 is designed to withstand typhoon winds and small earthquakes. 36 columns support the immense weight of the tower, including 8 larger columns filled with 10,000 psi concrete that makes this tower one of the most stable skyscrapers ever constructed. In order to minimise the swaying-effect in highest points of the building, caused by wind, engineers created a 662 metric tonne steel pendulum that hangs from the 92nd floor. This pendulum sways to offset the effects of the wind, and thus, keeps the tower stable. Each of the $2 million elevators can reach speeds of almost 38 mph, the current world record. The total cost of this 5 year construction project, completed in 2004, was about $1.758 billion.

Logitech K750 solar keyboard $80
PRESS RELEASE
If You've Got Light, You've Got Power: Logitech Introduces Solar-Powered Keyboard
Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 Powered By Light - Even Indoors
FREMONT, Calif. - Nov. 1, 2010 - Today, Logitech (SIX: LOGN) (NASDAQ: LOGI) introduced the Logitech® Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 - the company's first light-powered keyboard. The Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard powers itself whenever there's light, even indoors, making battery hassles a thing of the past.
"The keyboard is still the best input device for typing emails and IMs, updating your Facebook™ page or posting responses to your favorite blogs - and the Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 is the next big innovation in keyboard technology," said Denis Pavillard, vice president of product marketing for Logitech's keyboards and desktops. "The Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard is powered by light but can work in total darkness for up to three months. Plus, with its PVC-free construction and fully recyclable packaging, it's designed to minimize its footprint."
Powered by Light - Even Indoors
To give you hassle-free convenience, the Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard powers itself through its integrated solar panel - no power bricks or charging cables needed.
The included solar power app (available for download at logitech.com/k750/solarapp) features a lux meter to help you get the necessary light, makes it easy to get at-a-glance information about battery levels, and even alerts you when you need more power.
Logitech's first solar keyboard can be powered by indoor light and stays charged for at least three months in total darkness. Plus an integrated power-indicator light eliminates surprises.
Only 1/3-Inch Thick
But Logitech did much more than bring solar power to the keyboard.
At only 1/3-inch thick, the sleek Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard looks good. With its rounded edges and thin profile, this stylish, streamlined keyboard is a joy to hold and behold.
Feel-Good Typing
The low-profile keyboard features Logitech Incurve keys™. Using a concave design, Incurve keys support the shape of your fingertips, while helping guide your fingers to the right keys. In addition, the soft, rounded edges make it easy for your fingers to glide from key to key.
Powerful, Reliable Wireless Connection with Logitech Unifying Technology
The Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 offers Logitech Advanced 2.4 GHz wireless connectivity, keeping you connected with virtually no delays or dropouts, so you get all the benefits of a cord, with the convenience of wireless. Logitech Advanced 2.4 wireless also includes 128-bit AES encryption with the keyboard - one of the highest levels of security available.

Frontiers in Energy generation
As nonrenewable fuel supplies dwindle and pollution becomes a greater challenge, the search is on for viable, renewable sources of energy. Some of the more promising areas of research and development include the use of hydrogen, solar and wind power, and even nuclear energy. Chemical engineers have a unique grounding in chemistry, physics, and math. By virtue of this diverse training they are particularly well suited to the task of discovering and exploiting the many opportunities available in this array of alternative energy sources.
HYDROGEN FUEL : Today use of hydrogen as a fuel has inherent limitations. It is costly to produce and difficult to store and distribute to households and gas stations. Chemical engineers are in the forefront of the race to develop viable processes to produce safe, economical sources of hydrogen and to deliver it where needed. Learn more....
SOLAR and WIND ENERGY : The desire to harness the sun's energy is age old. However, it was not until 1939 that the first fully functioning solar-powered house was built at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Like solar energy, wind power is also environmentally friendly. In 2006 the total installed U.S. wind-based energy capacity could meet the annual electricity needs of 2.3 million homes.Learn more........
NUCLEAR ENERGY : Nuclear power plants create less air pollution than conventional power plants. But they do produce radioactive products that require long-term confinement storage. Advances spearheaded by chemical engineers have helped improve safety, increase power output, and maximize operating life. Learn more.....

Moon comming close to Earth on March 19
The moon will look bigger, may be 16 per cent larger, on March 19 when the full moon will be closest to the earth in the last 18 years, offering a special treat for the skygazers.
Moon goes round the earth in an elliptic orbit and that makes it come closer to the blue planet, the closest point being termed as the perigee, M P Birla Planetarium Director, Mr D.P. Duari, said.
The average distance between the moon and the earth is around 3,84,440 km. “But at the perigee, the distance can be close to around 3,57,000 km,” he said.
“On March 19, in addition to being a full moon, it will also be at the perigee and the earth-moon distance will be around 3,56,577 km, which is the closest in the past 18 years,” he said.
“The last time moon was close to the earth on a full moon day was on March 8, 1993,” Mr Duari said.
Rubbishing speculations that the closeness of the moon will lead to severe storms, earthquakes, volcanoes and natural disasters, the planetarium director said, “Given the decrease in the distance, which is imperceptibly small, it is believed that there is nothing to fear about the moon coming closer.”
However, he quoted the scientists to say that there may be a marginal increase in tidal action, but was not dangerous for triggering a major natural calamity.

Thursday launched the premium sedan Volvo S60 to take on BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
The Indian subsidiary of the Chinese major expects to be profitable by the end of this calendar year, said Paul de Voijs, managing director of Volvo Auto India. “We launched the S60 in India within four to five months of its global launch following the rising demand for premium cars in the subcontinent. We plan to sell at least 100 units per month,” Voijs told Financial Chronicle. He expects the domestic operations to be profitable in 2011, on the back of good sales in this calendar year.
The three variants of the S60 sedan are priced between Rs 27 and Rs 34 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). The BMW 3-Series models are priced between Rs 24.4 lakh and Rs 33.95 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai), while Audi A4 is priced at Rs 27.18 lakh to Rs 37.02 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai), and Mercedes-Benz C-Class variants at Rs 29.62 lakh and Rs 36.03 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai).
At present, BMW is the leader in the Indian luxury car segment with 40 per cent market share. It sold 6,246 units in 2010. Voijs further said that the luxury car market, which was just 1 per cent of total passenger car sales in India, has now grown to over 6 per cent with annual sales of over 15,000 units. Volvo has plans to invest $10-11 billion worldwide over the next five years to upgrade its products and technology following its acquisition in 2010 by China’s Zhejiang from Ford Motor.

Information Technology industry will be affected by mega Japanese earthquake
The earthquake in Japan has had a domino effect on technology as fabs and factories are damaged or forced to close following the aftermath. Scientists are warning a tsunami is headed towards many other countries bordering the Pacific, including Australia and New Zealand.
The quake, which hit Japan in the early hours of this morning measured 8.9 and bought with it a tsumani that is spreading across the Pacific. Together the earthquake has already shut down nuclear power plants and oil refineries, while a major steel plant was on fire.
Parts of the country are also without power and landslides have hit, while roads have been damaged, meaning that it will be hard to get materials in and out in the near future.
There are also major manufacturing industrial zones and electronics plants in the Miyagi prefecture and surrounding areas.
Back in August 2009 an earthquake temporarily devastated the tech industry. The internet was down and factories were forced to close for days. One example was Corning’s LCD glass manufacturing facility in Shizuoka, which came to a halt following a 6.4 magnitude earthquake off the Japanese coast. This is an earthquake on an altogether larger scale. *Update News is pouring in about more technology plant closures. Sony has reportedly stopped output at plants and evacuated six factories in the Northeastern part of Japan. Yasuhiro Okada, a spokesman for the company, told Business Week that Sony is now looking at the affects of the power outages and damage to its facilities.
It's likely that Blu-ray discs, magnetic heads and batteries will be affected as these were the main line of production at the factories. Canon however has reported that it's had a lucky escape. It hasn't suffered damage to plants, and it says production will not be stopped.
*Google has set up a page to help people in Japan find friends and relatives who may have been caught up in the tsunami.
The Person Finder service is available in English and in Japanese and lets people post messages of the person they are looking for or any information they have. Developers can also embed the tool on websites.
*Stocks are dropping. The Nikkei has slipped as a result of the earthquake with stocks falling nearly five percent.
Despite that there are exchanges that are still open, and Reuters reports that the yen rose due to predictions that Japanese investors would bring back funds from abroad.
This was evident in the stocks. When the quake hit the yen fell to around 83.29 per dollar.
However this rose to trade at 82.80 as people recalled how the flow of capital back into the country pushed the currency to a record high, following the aftermath of the Kobe earthquake in 1995.
It is thought that the economy could suffer in the near future as the destruction will require extra government spending, thus stretching the finances of Japan.
*Undersea power cables have also been damaged, which could take hold on the connectivity of calls made between China and Japan.
That's according to a spokesman for the parent company of Chinese network operator China Unicom. The company said that two or three cables were damaged and although it didn't have the full information, it has adjusted routers to redirected data along cables that haven't been damaged.
*Mobile networks are down as are landlines. The frantic efforts of relatives, business colleagues and friends to contact each other has only worsened the load on Japan’s infrastructure. People in Japan have been turning to the likes of Twitter and Facebook to communicate outside the country.
*Reports are in that Taiwan is unaffected - and a government Tsunami warning has been lifted.

Intel’s Thunderbolt Data Transfer Technology
Thunderbolt is Intel’s new IO port/ data transfer technology with a speed of 10 Gbps which allows you to transfer full length HD movie in less than 30 seconds or can make a backup of MP3 which is playable continously about 8760 h in just ten minutes. This technology was first introduced during 2009 named Light Peak. It was designed to transmit data through thin glass cables as it is based on fiber optics.
The ports speed is based on Intel’s PCI Express since the port is powered by a controller chip which unites PCI Express and existing Display port protocols for transmitting data and video in both ways through a single cable. This data transfer technology is going to be first available on newly released Apple’s MacBook Pro Laptops which uses a mini display port jack which is compatible with all other existing display ports and adapters.

Chrome OS beta test by Google has ended; no more Cr-48s to distribute
Google proved it was serious about the Chrome OS for cheap cloud computers when it kicked off a unique beta program last year. The company had a test device produced and sent thousands of Cr-48 notebooks to folks agreeing to test the OS and give feedback to Google. The sleek black notebooks didn’t have many frills, but the new OS made it a coveted item to receive on the doorstep (especially being it was free). Therefore, will no longer be sending out notebooks.
